ATA Adapters, Telephone Adapters and VoIP

An Analog Telephone Adapter, (or ATA device) is an adapter which is used to connect one or more analog telephones to a digital telephone system like Voice over IP (or VoIP) or another non-standard telephone system. ATA is also commonly referred to as a VoIP Adapter device because this is simply one of the most common uses for it. An ATA usually appears in the form of a small box along with a power adapter, an Ethernet port, and also one or more FXS (Foreign eXchange Station) telephone ports and possibly also an FXO link. A user may connect one or more standard analog phone devices into it and it will operate transparently on a VoIP network.

The commonest form of ATA adapter has at least one FXS telephone port, to connect with a standard telephone, plus an Ethernet jack to connect to a Local Area Network (LAN). By using one of these ATA adapters, it’s possible to connect a standard telephone to a remote VoIP server using an audio-visual or multimedia protocol such as H.323 and encoding the voice signal with a voice codec. Because the ATA communicates directly with the VoIP server, it doesn’t require a personal computer or any software.

An ATA has 2 Ports or Outlets:

1. Internet Port/Outlet

The outlet for your LAN/VoIP service, it is used to connect to the internet.

2. Telephone Port/Outlet

The outlet for your standard telephone; VoIP/Ethernet cable (RJ-45 connection) is connected on one end and telephone line cable (RJ-11 connector) is connected to the other side.

No software is required, is not even a computer, because ATA uses VoIP protocols which directly communicate with your VoIP service provider and independently connects to your phone system.

Some important features of ATA Adaptors:

  • Supports VoIP Protocols – The performance of an ATA device is better when it can support a larger number of protocols
  • Calling Features – ATA devices offer a number of standard calling features such as; Call Transfer, Call forwarding, caller ID and Call Waiting, among others
  • Power Failure Tolerance – If ever the power supply is cut off, ATA will automatically switch to a PSTN line so your communications are not disturbed
  • 3-Way Conference Calls – Talk with more than one person at a time
  • Interoperability – ATA devices are interoperable with other devices
  • High Voice Quality – ATA adaptors with the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) feature enable high voice quality during communications.

Buying an ATA Adapter

With an ATA device you don’t have to worry about money when making a phone call or additional equipment; all you need is an ATA device, an analog phone and an internet connection.

1. Determine the number of phones that are required so that you can determine how many ports on an adapter you need.

2.You should consider whether or not you want to keep your phone line.

There are a wide variety of ATA devices available in market these days from which you can choose appropriate for yourself. Some popular ATA Adapters are SIP ATA, the LinkSys ATA and Zoom ATA. Some specific examples of ATA Adaptors you might take a look at are the Zoom VoIP telephone adapter 5821F, the Linksys SPA8000 VoIP phone adapter or the Zoom 5800-72-00F VoIP phone adapter.
